Terraced fields of Naudanda, Nepal
Terraced fields in Naudanda, a village in Kaski District in the Gandaki Zone of northern-central Nepal.
While this mountain landscape may appear to be natural, it has been shaped by human labor. The rice terraces are built through generations of work. Deforestation has led to landslides -- one of the hazards of mountain life in Nepal. However, these landslides also help people to engineer the terraced fields. Once a landslide has loosened the rocky sides of the mountain, it is easier to construct the raised edges of the terraces.
