Nottoway River | rises in Virginia and flows SE into Hertford County, where it joins Blackwater River on the Gates-Hertford county line to form Chowan River. Nottoway, meaning "adders" or "rattlesnakes," was a name applied by Algonquian neighbors to Indians in the area. The name Nataway River appears on the Ogilby map, 1671, intended for the river but mistakenly applied to the present Wiccacon River. See also Weyanoke Creek. |
