| Monroe | city and county seat, central Union County. Named for President James Monroe (1758-1831). Inc. 1844. Merged with town of Benton Heights, which see, in 1945 and with town of West Monroe, which see, in 1949. William Henry Belk opened the first of his department stores there in 1888. Produces textiles, apparel, bricks, processed meat, industrial machinery, fabricated metals, and wood products. Alt. 576. |
| Monroe | former community in NE Warren County on Roanoke River. Grew up around Robinson's Ferry after Clack Robinson laid out a town on his lands near the ferry in 1818, named it for President James Monroe, and sold lots to prospective citizens; a post office, tavern, racetrack, tobacco warehouse, and stores soon sprang up. It was shown on the MacRae map, 1833, as a well-established community. In 1840, when the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad was completed, it began a rapid decline. |
