| Ledger | community in central Mitchell County on Snow Creek. Said to have been named by the Post Office Department because of a report submitted in a ledger by a local resident named Phillips. His record of mail sent and received in the community through another post office resulted in the establishment of a post office there. The "Good Will" Free Library, opened in Ledger in 1886 through the efforts of Charles Hallet Wing, is said to have been the first free public library in the state and the third county library in the United States. | Lee County | was formed in 1907 from Moore and Chatham Counties. Located in the central section of the state, it is bounded by Harnett, Moore, and Chatham Counties. It was named for Gen. Robert E. Lee (1807-70). Area: 256 sq. mi. County seat: Sanford, with an elevation of 375 ft. Townships, now numbered 1 to 7, were formerly Greenwood, Jonesboro, Cape Fear, Deep River, East Sanford, West Sanford, and Pocket. Produces tobacco, corn, wheat, oats, strawberries, dairy products, hogs, bricks, lumber, textiles, heavy equipment, electronics, sheet metal, apparel, industrial machinery, furniture, sand, and gravel. |
